Are there any readers of this now-vintage translation? I picked one up years back in the thrift store simply to add to my collection. Published by Tyndale. Aware of history, what an odd choice for publisher!
Anyway, other than being a product of the 20th century’s penchant for dumbing everything down, I pick it up and read it from time to time in my scriptural rotation. Outside of the Deuterocanon, it strikes me as speaking with your neighbor over the back fence. Very informal.
The standout books are the Deuterocanonical books. Checking the preface, I see that the Protestant publishers wisely (sadly?) chose to farm out their translation. It would actually be better if Protestants re-acquainted themselves with those books, since they were illegitimately removed from the collection.
Anyway, the translation of the Deuterocanon was done by Our Sunday Visitor, a solid Catholic source. I find the language to be a step or two above Tyndale’s translation of the 66 other books. Wisdom and Tobit being my personal faves in the OT, they remain good reads in this otherwise middle-school level bible.
A Christian can actually do far worse.
