What is the relation of modern evolutionary thought to the Bible?

My question concerns our Catholic dogma regarding the creation narrative in Genisis 1-11, specifically the correlation of God’s creation of Adam and Eve to temporal history and the relation of Dogmatic Teaching and our current understanding of scientific evolution. I have read Pope Pius XII encyclical Humani Generis and have listened to the metaphysical discussion regarding the Bible and Evolution from Fr. Spitzer"s “From Nothing to Cosmos” series. As a leader of a small faith group currently exploring to Bible program presented by Jeff Cavins “Unlocking the Mysteries of the Bible” any clarification and comment would be immensely helpful.
